21 March 2006
the first WORLD DOWNSYNDROME DAY

At the 6th International Symposium on Downsyndrome held in Palma, Majorca, the boards of Downsyndrome International and the European Downsyndrome Association (EDSA) decided to claim March 21st as World Downsyndrome Day. The 21st day of the 3rd month was chosen in order to highlight and promote a greater understanding of Downsyndrome which is associated with 3 copies of chromosomes 21 (Trisomy 21).

As it is too late to organise anything for this year it was decided to claim the day this year, to make announcements and to use the intervening time to have the date ratified by the UN. It is also expected that a new international logo will be designed specifically for the day.

Cedric Depuydt from Belgium representing EDSA and Vanessa dos Santos from South Africa, representing DS International are the co-ordinators for the two organisations in this new venture.

We expect that we will do something effective to highlight the day in March 2006.
